On this site, we would like to document our experiences on the construction and the utilization of Sun Hives and that we bring the people who are interested in this style of beehives together. 

The basket was designed by sculptor Günter Mancke with the goal of giving back bees their natural form and to free them from earthbound cubical boxes. The from is based on the so-called catenary, which is made from the bees naturally when they build their honeycombs. The bees are able to build their essentially legitimate honeycombs freely.
We would like to have the bees live in trees, the place where they actually come from. Our baskets are therefore hung high: either in the trees or underneath the houses' overhanging roofs.  

We have attended the theme of bees for a few years already; three years ago we have started our outline for the project in the Dorf-University Dürnau, with the goal of building the basket to explore and learn, so that our bees can move into new, roundly formed beehives. By this time, we no longer use box beehives and offer all the people the opportunity to alternatively become closer to beekeeping with the Sun Hives.
